Oxycodone is used to treat severe and long-term pain. It requires special monitoring because of its risk of addiction, abuse, and overdose. Oxycodone is typically only prescribed if other pain medications haven’t worked because of these serious risks. It’s available in both immediate-release (IR) and extended-release (ER) forms.

What’s the difference between oxycodone, Oxycontin, and Xtampza ER?
Oxycodone, Oxycontin, and Xtampza ER all contain the same medication, but each is absorbed by your body differently. Oxycodone is an immediate-release tablet, meaning it starts working soon after you take it and provides quick pain relief. It’s typically used “as needed” for sudden pain, and lasts about 4 to 6 hours. Oxycontin tablets and Xtampza ER capsules are extended-release forms of oxycodone, which are slowly released into your body to provide longer-lasting pain relief. Both are used every 12 hours for around-the-clock pain relief in people who suffer from long-term pain and should never be used “as needed” for pain. Oxycontin and Xtampza ER are made as special “abuse-deterrent” forms, meaning that it’s harder to crush and snort, inject, or smoke the medication.
